Therapeutic Riding
Therapeutic Riding at Camp Able
Therapeutic Riding is a 45-minute session taught by a PATH International certified instructor with the support of trained volunteers. During these sessions our instructors focus on teaching horsemanship and riding skills to individuals with special needs, with the goal of increasing functional life skills and building toward greater independence. The natural movement of a horse walking closely mirrors the motion of the human pelvis, delivering sensory and neurological input that traditional therapies often cannot replicate. Our instructors cater each session to the individual based on their physical, mental and emotional needs.
Benefits of Therapeutic Riding
The benefits of therapeutic riding go far beyond what most people expect the first time they watch a session. Physically, the movement of the horse engages muscles, improves balance, and builds the kind of core strength and motor control that carries over into everyday life. Cognitively, riders build focus, communication, and behavioral skills as they learn to guide and connect with their horse each week. Emotionally, the relationship between a rider and their horse builds self-esteem, reduces anxiety, and gives every participant a genuine sense of accomplishment. For many of our riders and their families, therapeutic riding does not just improve one area of life, it changes the whole picture.
